Bio - Edmund Cham

Edmund Cham was born in Hong Kong in 1968. He received secondary education at St Paul’s Co-educational College and then studied Law at the University of Hong Kong. He practised as a solicitor until 1996 and has worked in the legal publishing field since 1997. He divides his time between the USA (where he currently resides with his family) and Hong Kong.

Edmund took up piano playing at the age of 14. He attended formal lessons for two years and then started learning on his own. As an amateur, he shows a remarkable interest in the byways of the piano literature and has played works by Balakirev, Dohnanyi, Levitzki, Medtner and many other lesser-known composers in concert.

Edmund is also an active chamber musician and, as such, has performed works by Arnold, Bruch, Glazunov, Poulenc and others. He also writes music for the piano. His transcription of Rachmaninoff’s ‘Romance’ (from Suite No.2 Op.17) was published in June 2007 by American publisher Musica Obscura, and his transcription of Ravel’s La Valse is scheduled to be published in 2008.

Edmund recently co-founded Music-Go-Round, a voluntary organization which aims to promote classical music in Hong Kong by way of concerts and publication of writings. The inaugural concert of this organization will be held in February 2008.

Edmund gave his début recital in 1994 and has since then appeared regularly at lunchtime recitals at St. John’s Cathedral. His solo appearances include two ongoing series of recitals, featuring miniatures and Russian piano sonatas respectively.
